Female Condoms
What is a female condom?
A female condom, also referred to as the internal condom, is a plastic pouch that has flexible rings on either end that is inserted deep within the vagina or anus during intercourse to prevent pregnancy and HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
How does a female condom work?
Female condoms work by covering the inside and outside of the vagina. They collect the pre-ejaculate (pre-cum) and semen when a man ejaculates and prevent sperm from joining with an egg, which causes pregnancy. By covering the outside of the vagina or anus and keeping semen and pre-ejaculate (pre-cum) out, female condoms reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
How effective is this method?
The female condom is 75-95 percent effective in preventing pregnancy and offers good protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
What are the advantages of using this method?
What are the disadvantages of using this method?
- They can be noisy. Adding additional lubricant can help decrease the amount of noise.
- They can reduce the feeling for some during intercourse.
- The outer ring can slip into the vagina during vaginal intercourse or into the anus during anal intercourse.
- They may irritate the vagina, vulva (a woman's external sex organs), penis or anus.
