What is Planned Parenthood of Indiana’s Peer Education Program?

The Peer Education Program trains outstanding youth leaders in sexuality and other health issues so they can be resources for their peers.

Participants in the Peer Education Program are provided with factual, medically-accurate information about sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, sexual orientation, pregnancy prevention, and healthy relationships. They also learn about the social environment in which sexual decisions are often made and the factors involved in making responsible choices.

Peer Education Program goals include:

  • To offer comprehensive sexuality education and skills training to youth
  • To provide and maintain a peer facilitated sexuality education program
  • To decrease the risk-taking behaviors of all participants
  • To improve family communication

What Are the Requirements to Participate in the Peer Education Program?

All potential Peer Educators will be required to attend 25-hours of training and orientation hosted and organized by Planned Parenthood of Indiana.

To qualify as a junior or senior high school Peer Educator, you must:

  • Be 14 to 18 years old
  • Still attend school or have recently graduated
  • Successfully complete the 25-hour training program

To qualify as a college Peer Educator, you must:

  • Be at least 18
  • Still attend college or have recently graduated
  • Successfully complete the 25-hour training program

Peer Educators are volunteers with Planned Parenthood of Indiana and receive a stipend at the completion of the program.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana currently has Peer Education Programs in Bloomington, Indianapolis, Ft. Wayne, and Merrillville. Contact the Planned Parenthood educator closest to you to learn more about participating in a Peer Education Program.
