Planned Parenthood's Seventh Annual Gathering of Goddesses and Gods a Night to Remember
Event Raises Record Amount for Preventive Health Care; National President wows the crowd
Planned Parenthood of Indiana's (PPIN's) seventh annual Gathering of Goddesses and Gods on Saturday, May 8, raised a record amount for preventive, reproductive health care. The event at the Marriott in downtown Indianapolis drew a crowd of about 550 people and raised net proceeds of more than $130,000 for PPIN's Women's Health Fund. That's the largest amount ever raised at this annual gala.
"This year's event coincided with the 50th anniversary of the birth control pill," said PPIN President and CEO Betty Cockrum. "What better way to mark that occasion than to raise funds so that more women can have access to birth control and decide if and when to start their families?"
Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) President Cecile Richards was a featured speaker and shared with attendees specifics on how the new health care reform bill will help many more Americans to access vital reproductive health services.
The daughter of former Texas Governor Ann Richards, Cecile Richards began her career as a grassroots organizer for low-wage workers and religious freedom initiatives, and has since become one of the nation's leading advocates for health care, reproductive rights and social justice. Richards assumed leadership of PPFA in February of 2006.
The Gathering of Goddesses and Gods benefits PPIN's Women's Health Fund, which assists low-income women and men with critical reproductive health services, including Pap tests, breast exams, STD testing and treatment, and birth control.
Indianapolis' quintessential volunteer, Claudette Einhorn and her husband, Dr. Larry Einhorn, one of the country's leading cancer physicians, chaired the event, which was sponsored by Cummins and Nuvo.
