Planned Parenthood of Indiana

Who is this for?

These pages have been written for family members and caregivers of young people. Whether you are a mom, a dad, a grandparent, a brother or sister, another family member, or caregiver, if you are looking for information to help with talking to the teen in your life about sexuality issues, you have come to the right place.

Planned Parenthood values and celebrates all types of families and believes that parents and caregivers should be the primary educators of their children when it comes to sex and sexuality-related issues. In these pages, we will refer to “parent” or “caregiver” to mean the person or people who are involved in raising a child or teen. We want to give you the tools and help you need to understand more about sexuality education and to pass this information on to your children.

Many parents and caregivers start to think about sexuality and sex education when their child reaches age 12 or 13. For this reason, we will often refer to teens or adolescents in these pages. Some of the activities are aimed at families with children who are aged around 12 to 16, but will still be useful reading for parents of other age groups.

Most of the information on these pages, though, is for you, the adult. You will find information that we hope you can take away with you and that will help you in communicating important information about sexuality to your child.

Adults, especially those in a parenting role, strongly influence their children’s attitudes, values, behaviors, and decisions. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy illustrates the importance of parental influence in teens’ decisions about sexual activity and teen pregnancy in its report Parent Power.
