Colposcopy, Cryotherapy and LEEP
A colposcopy is a painless examination of the cervix and vagina with a low power telescope, called a colposcope, which is mounted on a stand. If your Pap test finds the presence of abnormal cells or if there is a visible abnormality, a colposcope may be used to help diagnose the abnormality and develop a plan for treatment.
If there are any abnormal areas on the cervix, a tiny sample of tissue (biopsy) may be taken and sent to a laboratory for closer study.
Cryotherapy is an office procedure used to treat an area of tissue on the cervix. This procedure uses a speculum to open the vaginal walls. Then, the cervix is touched lightly with an instrument called a cryoprobe that rapidly freezes the abnormal tissue.
PPIN health centers in Bloomington, Evansville, Lafayette and Muncie, as well as at our Northwest (Indianapolis) location offer colposcopy and cryotherapy.
LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure) is a treatment option in which a fine wire loop with a special high-frequency current allows precise removal of abnormal tissue from your cervix. Because the wire is so thin, there is very little damage to surrounding tissue. The loop also seals blood vessels, which decreases bleeding. A tissue sample from your cervix is sent to a laboratory for examination to rule out further problems. LEEP is only available at our Northwest (Indianapolis) location.
