News and Stories: The Truth About Our Funding
An open letter from President and CEO Betty Cockrum
A
movement is afoot to take away all of Planned Parenthood’s family
planning funding both here in Indiana and across the country.
This is happening despite the fact that all of the federal funding Planned Parenthood receives is used for basic, preventive health services, from Pap tests to birth control to screenings and treatment for STDs. Not a penny is used for abortions.
The federal grant funds that are in jeopardy are used at eight of our health centers in northwestern and rural southern Indiana, where the need is greatest. Specifically, these centers are located in Gary, East Chicago, Michigan City, Elkhart, Bedford, Seymour, Scottsburg and New Albany. Even with the federal funding, these eight centers operate at a net loss of more than $90,000 – we make up the difference through private fundraising.
This is the truth about our funding, yet some state legislators are trying to make it illegal for the state to contract with or grant to PPIN. To make matters worse, anti-choice organizations are using deceptive tactics to try and discredit our organization and make the case for taking away our funding.
We are a trusted health care provider in Indiana. We’ve been here for nearly 80 years, while other providers have come and gone. Our patients trust us, and we are here to stay.
Thank you for your continued trust in us. When you hear someone stretching the truth about our funding, please share what you’ve learned here, as well as this additional information.
Take action and stop the attacks on Planned Parenthood.
