Pubic Lice, Crabs, and Scabies

Pubic lice, often referred to as "crabs," are tiny insects that live in hair on the skin. Scabies are tiny mites that burrow under the skin and cause an itchy rash. Both pubic lice and scabies can be spread through sexual contact but can also be spread by sharing bed linen, brushes, clothes, or through other types of close contact with an infected person. Millions of people experience infections from pubic lice or scabies every year.

Common Symptoms

  • Intense itching
  • Scabies dig into the skin causing small bumps or rashes that appear in dirty-looking, small curling lines on the penis, between the fingers, on the buttocks, breasts, wrists, and thighs and around the belly button.
  • May be able to see insects or eggs

Testing and Treatment

  • Testing: Lice or scabies can often be detected with a visual exam. If needed, a microscopic identification of the infected area can be used.
  • Treatment: Special prescribed shampoos or lotions can be used to treat scabies or pubic lice. All clothing and bedding need to be washed in hot water as well.

Reduce your risk: Practice safer sex!
